Membrane Bioreactors

mbr1The Hydroflux Membrane Bioreactor MBR process is a system that uses membranes submerged within the aeration tank to remove or retain biomass from the treated liquor as opposed to sedimentation principals employed with other conventional biological processes.

One of the key benefits of an MBR system is that it effectively overcomes the issues of poor settling flocs in conventional activated sludge or other sedimentation based biological processes as all treated wastewater is discharged via the membrane barrier. The Hydroflux MBR process therefore will always results in a very high quality of permeate or treated water that is virtually solids free.

MBR technology is increasingly popular for industrial wastewater treatment due to its small footprint, reliably, decreasing life-cycle costs and the ability for wastewater reuse.

Operation and configurations

How it works
The principle of membrane filtration is based upon the separation of solids suspended in a wastewater by means of a pressure difference. While the water permeates through the membrane, the solids, bacteria and even most viruses are retained on the concentrate side on the membrane surface where they are removed by relative movement. The pressure differential necessary to pass the liquid through the membrane depends on the membrane pore size and membrane quality.

In industrial wastewater applications, like conventional aerobic systems, oxygen is introduced into a bio reactor where bacteria consume nutrients and organic matter. The difference between the MBR and other aerobic systems is that the treated wastewater is separated from the biomass by membrane filtration. There are two main configurations as shown below

Configurations
MBR operation mode
MBRmode
In this process variant the HUBER BioMem® modules are used as filtration step in the well-known membrane bioreactor process (MBR). The degradation of dissolved contaminants takes place within the bioreactor, prior to actual membrane filtration within the filtration chamber where the HUBER BioMem® modules are installed. The number of installed modules depends on the specific process layout and is tailored to fit the application requirements.

SMBR operation mode
SMBRmode
The HUBER BioMem® SMBR principle is based on the combination of a conventional MBR process together with a sequential feed. This easily combines biological wastewater treatment and filtration within a single tank, enabled by a unique usage of the purge air within the SMBR reactor both for “mechanical” tasks (membrane cleaning), mixing within the reactor through loop flow generation and biological functions (oxygen supply for wastewater clarification through microorganisms).

Sizes and Capacities

MBR systems for industrial wastewater treatment are always sized for each application.

The size of the Hydroflux Industrial MBR is dependent on many factors including the flow, load and performance requirements. There is however no restriction on sizing MBR’s hence they can be designed for virtually any industrial wastewater application and flow.

Advantages of MBR's in Industrial processes

Some of the advantages of the Hydroflux MBR in industrial applications include:
  • Smallest footprint of all aerobic biological processes due to high operating MLSS
  • Low operation and energy costs
  • Very high performance vith virtually solids free effluent
  • Can be configured for nutrient removal
  • Membranes made of well-proven, durable PES material(more than 10 years experience)
  • Modular design, system options available
  • Available for installation in tanks or as containerised units
  • Operating regime adaptable to specific requirements

Features of the Hydroflux MBR

The Hydrolfux HUBER MBR system features high quality membranes configured for optimum performance:

Hydroflux uses, for all membrane systems, a high performance hydrophilic membrane which has very good filtration properties with a low affinity to fouling and covering layer formation material contained within the wastewater. The membrane pore size of approx. 38 nm lies within the ultrafiltration range. This allows high flow rates (up to 60 l/m²h) at a low transmembrane pressure (< 100 mbar) whilst retaining all solids, bacteria and the majority of viruses. In addition to the liquid phase only ions and low-molecular dissolved substances pass through the membrane. Typical surface-related flux: up to 35 l/m²h.

The overflows required for a constant operation of the ultrafiltration membranes are achieved through a highly effective air flow on the concentrate side with only one sixth or one eighth of the installed membrane surface being scoured at a time. This intermittent scouring at low throughputs minimises energy costs.

Other features include:

  • Low operation and energy costs
  • High-efficiency scouring
  • No permeate backwashing required
  • Membranes made of well-proven, durable PES material(more than 10 years experience)
  • All structural elements made of high-quality stainless steel
  • Modular design, system options available
  • Available for installation in tanks or as containerised units
  • Operating regime adaptable to specific requirements
  • Available as prefabricated system solution

Our Services

DESIGN CONSTRUCTION OPERATION

Engaging a professional wastewater treatment company to look after the entire wastewater project is convenient, economical and hassle free option for industry.

Hydroflux Industrial can provide all process design works, manufacture and fabrication, construction and even complete operation of your wastewater treatment plant.

When Hydroflux Industrial provides complete solutions, we can either undertake a contact on a turnkey basis or work together with building services engineers and other construction professionals to ensure that the project is delivered smoothly, without interruption and on time.

BUILD OPERATE TRANSFER (BOT) FINANCING

The Hydroflux Group is able to offer a Build Operate & Transfer (BOT) option for water and wastewater assets in Australia and New Zealand. This innovative partnership arrangement strengthens existing strong bonds between Hydroflux and their customers for the long term.

Hydroflux, represented by a special purpose vehicle dedicated to the project, supplies the design, construction, financing, and operation of the water or wastewater plant. The plant is transferred to the client at the end of the contract, which is generally around 10 years.

Hydroflux also purchase existing water and wastewater plants on a similar basis, which releases cash to our clients for either returning or distributing to investors or for funding other investments in their core business.

The multidisciplinary structure of the Hydroflux group including design, construction, equipment supply and operation makes Hydroflux the ideal BOT water and wastewater partner.

Please contact Hydroflux if would like to explore the option of either acquiring a new water or wastewater facility without capital outlay or would like to free up cash by selling your existing water or wastewater assets.

Configurations

In contrast to the various custom designed options, the “container“ installation is only available in SMBR operation mode. Biological degradation of contaminants and filtration takes place in one or more containers, depending on the throughput rate. These containers are coated on the inside and manufactured by transport standards. HUBER BioMem® plants therefore provide maximum flexibility of usage on different sites. Containerised units are supplied as prefabricated, tested and ready-to-operate units. This ensures fast installation and commissioning.
